Pharmacy scheme

Who are members?

The Pension Scheme for the Pharmacy Sector is a statutory occupational pension scheme that includes more than 15,000 members throughout the pharmacy sector.

The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (SPK) dministers the pension scheme on behalf of the Ministry of Labor, in accordance with the law of June 26, 1953, with subsequent amendments.

All pharmacies in the country

The law covers pharmacists and employees in pharmacies with a position size of at least 20 percent. The law includes personnel at all pharmacies in the country. This also applies to those who are hired where there is ownership interest or a similar connection between the pharmacy and the operating company.

In addition to employees in pharmacies and pharmacists, the ministry may decide that employees in other positions related to pharmacy may become members.

Members receiving pensions

Employees with partial retirement pensions and AFP contractual pensions are not members if the position falls below the minimum requirement for membership, which is 20 percent.

However, employees with partial disability pensions have both the right and the obligation to be members, even if they work in a position that falls below the minimum requirement.

Multiple positions simultaneously

Employees with one or more positions covered by the pension scheme have the right to membership when their average working hours together exceed the minimum requirement. This assumes that the positions are covered by the pension scheme.

Working hours exceeding a full-time position (100 percent) do not count.

Exceptions or exemptions from membership obligation

Individuals who perform practical service at a pharmacy to qualify for the pharmacy exam are exempt from the pension scheme.

The pension scheme may exempt an employee from membership if they are in another occupational pension scheme or if there are other specific reasons for exemption.
