Financial support for dependants
Your membership in SPK provides security for both yourself and your family. When a member dies, the dependants (spouse, partner and children) may be entitled to a lump sum payment from the group life insurance, as well as pension in form of monthly payments.
Important information
- We offer two different support schemes for dependants - pension for children and spouse/partner plus group life insurance.
- In general, both pension and group life insurance are granted and paid automatically. We will contact you if we need any documentation.
- Dependants' pension for spouse/partner is paid for the rest of your life.
- It is the spouse or registered civil partner who is entitled to a dependants' pension. Please check Frequently Asked Questions below for more information.
- The member's children under the age of 20 are also entitled to monthly payments called child pension.
- The group life insurance for government employees is valid if the member was employed in an active position at the time of death.
- The group life insurance covers cohabitants, in addition to spouse/partner and children under the age of 25. Please note the different age limits for children between the pension and insurance scheme.
The process prior to payment
- We receive a death notification from Norwegian authorities (folkeregisteret or NAV), or the member's employer.
- We inform the member's family about compensation right under the group life insurance scheme. The dependants must confirm to us before the payment is made.
- In some cases, it is required that you apply for dependants’ benefits from NAV. We will inform you if relevant in your case.
- We start case handling for dependants’ pension for you as a spouse/registered civil partner and for the children. The duration of our case handling is normally 2 to 3 months from the time of notification. You will hear from us if we need your marriage certificate or other documentation.
