Group life insurance for state employees

Group life insurance offers compensation to your surviving relatives as a one-time payment in case of your death, regardless of cause. The insurance is a part of your salary conditions and valid all year, around the clock.

Conditions and coverage of the group life scheme 

  • You are included in the group life scheme as long as you are actively working.
  • Your employer must have group life insurance in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (SPK).
  • Your employer must be part of the Basic Collective Agreement for the Civil Service, also called The Basic Agreement (hovedtariffavtalen i staten).
  • Through your collective wages agreement and your salary conditions, your spouse, partner, cohabitant and/or children are guaranteed a one-time payment should you die.
  • Your cohabitant receives compensation if you have shared an address for two years, or live together with common children.
  • You are also insured when you are on paid sick leave or on tariff agreed parental leave.
  • You are covered for up to one year's unpaid leave, should you not have other paid work or have started your own business.
  • If you receive full disability pension from SPK, you are covered by the group life insurance for two years after your disability pension started
  • Born 1962 or earlier: When you start receiving contractual early pension (AFP) or retirement pension, the group life insurance is no longer valid.
  • Born 1963 or later: You are covered by the scheme as long as you are working, also when receiving pension in parallel.  
  • The insurance is valid around the clock
  • Compensation is made without regard to the cause of death.

Compensation

  • Spouse, registered partner or cohabitant receives a one-time payment equivalent to 14 times the National Insurance Scheme's basic amount (G). 
  • Children under the age of 25 receive an amount of 5 G. In case of no surviving spouse, partner or cohabitant, payment to each eligible child increases to 7 G.
  • Your estate receives 4 G if there are no surviving relatives to claim compensation.
  • One "G" equals 130 160 Norwegian kroner as per May 2025.

No need to apply

The national population register will send us the notification of death, whereafter we contant any registered dependants. Co-habitants are not registered, so please contact us to register dependant partner. 

Ask your employer about insurance schemes

Note that primary school teachers, employed by a municipality or a county municipality), are not part of the SPK group life scheme.
