Occupational injury insurance for state employees
The insurance covers accidents occurring at work or occupational injuries already from your first working day, during working hours and while at the workplace.
Important to know before applying for compensation
An occupational injury is defined as injury of sudden and unforeseen occurrence, and not a gradual aggravation of an existing injury. Stress and muscle pain are not considered occupational injuries. Please get in touch with us if you are uncertain whether your injury is occupational or not.
How to report an injury and apply for compensation
- Please report the injury to us as soon as possible after it occurred.
- Download the claim report form and fill it out. You must ask your employer to fill out part two of the form. Submit the form – the two parts separately if you wish - either electronically via the contact form on our login page or by mail to SPK, PO Box 10 Skøyen, 0212 Oslo.
- We evaluate your application, investigating whether you are entitled to compensation and contact you within 30 days to clarify the process further.
- If your application is accepted, we will pay the compensation to the bank account number we have registered on your account.
- Please note that your employer is obliged to report occupational injuries to NAV (The Norwegian Labour and Welfare service). Please check with your employer if your injury has been reported.
Who is covered by the insurance?
- Government employees, rescue personnel, military conscripts, state interns and prisoners are covered while working.
- Some of our member groups (such as most teachers) have their occupational injury insurance elsewhere than SPK. Please ask your employer for more information about your current insurance plan.
- Government employees are covered by the Occupational Injuries Insurance Act on business trips while performing work. Government employees are also insured against accidents during their entire journey (24-hour coverage).
When are you covered by the insurance?
- The insurance is valid from your first working day.
You are insured within working hours. - The injury must be caused by a work accident or by exposure to a sudden or unexpected external event at work.
- Some diseases caused by harmful effects at the workplace (such as infectious diseases or viruses), may be defined as occupational injuries with a compensation right.
What does your insurance cover?
- Compensation for lost income, such as the difference between sick leave benefits and your normal income.
- Compensation for lost future income due to absence caused by the injury. The compensation is calculated based on your income, degree of disability and age. The compensation amount is decreased by increasing age.
- Compensation for permanent injury.
- Legal assistance connected to compensation claims under the Norwegian Occupational Injuries Insurance Act.
- Medical expenses, such as doctor appointments, are covered by NAV. In some cases, you can be reimbursed for medical expenses which are not covered by NAV.
- Accident or injury while on a business trip or a temporary posting abroad.
Please remember to apply within 3 years
It is your own responsibility to apply for compensation within three years after you became aware of the relevant injury or illness. The limitation period starts at the end of the calendar year of the incident causing the injury in question.
