Dependants pension for former members

If the deceased worked for an employer with an occupational pension in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (SPK) earlier in his or her working career, the dependants (spouse or children) may be entitled to monthly pension payments.

The deceased must have been a member of SPK and possibly other public occupational pension schemes for a total of three years minimum. Membership time in public pension schemes in EU-countries will also count towards the three-year minimum. Read more about working and living abroad.

Dependants' pension is a common term for spouse's pension and child's pension.

Who is entitled to a dependant pension?

  • The spouse or registered civil partner is entitled to a spouse pension in form of a monthly payment. The pension is paid for life but ceases if the spouse remarries.
  • Children under the age of 20 are also entitled to a fixed monthly payment (child pension) until their 20th birthday.
  • Divorced spouses may be entitled to a pension as long as they do not remarry.

Cohabitants are not entitled to a dependants' pension from SPK.

If the deceased previously in his or her career was a member of several public occupational pension schemes in Norway, (such as KLP or Oslo pensjonsforsikring in addition to SPK), it is the last pension scheme that calculates and pays out the dependent’s pension to surviving relatives.

Important information if you live outside of Norway

We receive notification of deaths from the National Population Register (Folkeregisteret). However, if the deceased lived abroad, survivors should contact us. Often we will not be aware of dependants living outside Norway. In those cases, dependants living abroad must contact us.

You are welcome to get in touch with us if you have any questions. Please log in using your D-number and Bank-ID, or call us at +47 22 24 15 00.

The process prior to payment

  1. We receive a death notification from the National Population Register. If the deceased or depependants lived/live abroad, survivors should contact us.
  2. In some cases, it is required that the dependants apply for dependants’ benefits from NAV. We will inform you if relevant in your case.
  3. We then start the case handling of a dependants’ pension  The duration of our case handling is normally 2 to 3 months from the time of notification. We will get in touch with you if we need your marriage certificate or any other documentation.

NAV pays the monthly pension on our behalf.
